Tesla Powerwall 3: The Features That Matter Most in a Home Battery

Tesla Powerwall has become one of the most recognisable home batteries in Australia – but brand recognition alone isn’t the reason we continue to install it. Powerwall 3 combines substantial battery capacity, strong power output, an integrated solar inverter, backup capability and one of the most polished home-energy apps available in a single system.

AG Solar is a premium Tesla installer with extensive Powerwall experience. We have installed and supported hundreds of Tesla batteries for homeowners, particularly throughout southern Sydney and the Sutherland Shire, from the Powerwall 2 generation through to today’s Powerwall 3 and Expansion platform.

That experience has given us a very clear view of where Powerwall performs well and the types of homeowners it tends to suit. So what actually makes Powerwall 3 different?

Powerwall 3 in simple terms

A single Powerwall 3 provides 13.5 kWh of usable battery storage. It also incorporates Tesla’s solar inverter and system controller, allowing solar to be connected directly to the Powerwall 3 where the system is designed that way.

Depending on local conditions and the installation, Powerwall 3 can provide up to 10 kW of on-grid and backup power from a single unit. That combination of storage and power is important.

Battery capacity tells you how much energy you can store. Power tells you how much electrical load the system can support at one time.

Powerwall 3 improves significantly on the power capability of the earlier Powerwall generation, making a single battery relevant to a wider range of household loads. But the hardware is only part of the story.

For many of our customers, some of Powerwall’s most useful features are the ones they interact with through the Tesla app after the installers have left. Here are four that matter most.

1. The Tesla app makes home energy easy to understand

A solar and battery system can be technically complex behind the scenes. The homeowner shouldn’t need to be an electrical engineer to use it. This is one of Tesla’s biggest strengths.

The Tesla app provides a simple visual representation of energy moving between:

Solar -> Home -> Powerwall -> Grid

You can see how much solar is being generated, how much electricity the home is consuming, whether the battery is charging or discharging, its state of charge and whether electricity is being imported from or exported to the grid.

You can also review historical energy data rather than only seeing what is happening at that moment.

That visibility changes the way many homeowners think about electricity. Instead of receiving a bill weeks later and wondering where all the energy went, they can see the behaviour of the home in real time.

For customers who want to actively manage their electricity costs, that information is extremely useful.

2. Self-Powered and Savings modes let Powerwall manage energy intelligently

Powerwall isn’t simply a battery that charges when the sun shines and discharges when it gets dark. The Tesla software can be configured around the homeowner’s priorities.

In Self-Powered mode, Powerwall is designed to increase the amount of your own solar energy that you use at home. Excess solar charges the battery during the day, and that stored energy is then used later rather than immediately relying on the grid.

For homeowners primarily interested in energy independence, that is a simple and effective strategy. For customers on time-of-use electricity tariffs, Savings mode can take the strategy further.

Powerwall can use information about the electricity tariff to prioritise charging and discharging around cheaper and more expensive energy periods. That may mean preserving stored energy for expensive peak periods or, where the system and tariff allow it, charging from lower-cost grid electricity so that expensive electricity can be avoided later.

This becomes particularly valuable during winter, when solar generation may not always be enough to completely recharge the battery. Rather than thinking only in terms of “solar charging the battery”, Powerwall can become part of a broader strategy for buying less electricity when it is expensive.

3. Backup Reserve and Storm Watch provide another level of energy security

For many homeowners, reducing electricity bills is the primary reason for buying a battery. Backup power is often the second.

Powerwall automatically detects a grid outage and can transition to supplying the home from stored battery energy, subject to the way the backup system has been designed. Through the Tesla app, the homeowner can also choose how much battery energy they want to keep in reserve for an outage.

This is called Backup Reserve.

A lower reserve allows more of the battery to be used every day to reduce grid electricity purchases.

A higher reserve keeps more energy available in case the grid fails. The customer can change that balance themselves in the app.

Tesla’s Storm Watch feature goes a step further. When enabled, Powerwall can respond to qualifying severe-weather warnings in Australia and prioritise charging the battery so that more stored energy is available if the storm causes a grid outage.

The homeowner receives a notification through the Tesla app when Storm Watch activates. It is a good example of the value of combining the battery hardware with intelligent software: the system can prepare for a potential outage before it happens.

4. Powerwall 3 can grow as the home's energy requirements grow

A common concern when buying a battery is whether today’s battery will still be enough five years from now.

Household electricity consumption is increasing as more homeowners add electric vehicles, heat-pump hot water, induction cooking, larger air-conditioning systems and other electrical loads.

Powerwall 3 has been designed with expansion in mind. Each Powerwall 3 provides 13.5 kWh of usable storage, and Tesla’s Powerwall 3 Expansion units can each add a further 13.5 kWh of energy capacity.

Up to three Expansion units can be connected to a compatible Powerwall 3, allowing one Powerwall 3-based storage group to increase to as much as 54 kWh of total battery capacity.

Multiple Powerwall 3 units can also be used in supported system designs. The important point isn’t that everybody should install the maximum amount of storage. Most shouldn’t.

The advantage is that a correctly designed Tesla system can provide a pathway to expand later if the household’s requirements genuinely increase.

The integrated solar inverter can simplify a new solar-and-battery system

Powerwall 3 isn’t simply a battery with a separate solar inverter attached. It includes an integrated solar inverter with multiple solar inputs, allowing a new solar array to be connected directly to the Powerwall 3 in an appropriately designed installation.

That can make Powerwall 3 particularly attractive when solar and battery storage are being installed together. It can also be added to many existing solar systems, so installing Powerwall does not automatically mean replacing a working solar inverter.

The right architecture depends on the existing equipment, roof layout, solar capacity and what the homeowner wants the system to achieve.

What about charging a Tesla vehicle?

For households that also own a compatible Tesla vehicle, the ecosystem provides another useful feature: Charge on Solar.

This can allow the Tesla vehicle to use excess solar generation for charging, while Powerwall and the home’s other energy requirements are managed through the same Tesla ecosystem. Not everyone needs this feature, and owning a Tesla vehicle certainly isn’t a requirement for owning Powerwall.

But for households moving toward greater electrification, having the home battery and vehicle operating within the same software environment can be very convenient.

Is Tesla Powerwall 3 right for everyone?

No battery is. Powerwall 3 is a strong product, but the right home battery depends on more than the logo on the front.

We still need to consider:

  • daily electricity usage;
  • evening and overnight consumption;
  • existing solar equipment;
  • available solar generation;
  • single-phase or three-phase supply;
  • backup expectations;
  • installation location;
  • future electrical loads; and
  • the homeowner’s electricity tariff.

 

There are situations where another premium battery platform may provide a better fit. Our role isn’t to recommend Tesla simply because we install a lot of Powerwalls.

It is to understand the property first and recommend Powerwall where its strengths line up with what the homeowner is trying to achieve.

Why the installer matters with Powerwall?

Tesla supplies the technology, but the quality of the finished system still depends heavily on how it is designed and installed.

Battery position, cable routes, switchboard integration, solar design, backup configuration and commissioning all influence the final result. And once the system is installed, having an experienced company available to assist with questions, service and warranty matters is part of the ownership experience.
