If you’re researching home batteries, it doesn’t take long before the choice becomes confusing.
Tesla, Sigenergy, Fronius and Sungrow are all well-regarded battery and home energy brands, but they aren’t identical.
Different systems have different strengths.
Some offer greater flexibility in battery sizing. Some have particularly strong backup capabilities. Some integrate exceptionally well with existing equipment from the same manufacturer. Others provide a very mature, proven solar-and-battery ecosystem. So which one should you choose?
At AG Solar, we install and support four primary battery brands: Tesla, Sigenergy, Fronius and Sungrow.
We deliberately keep our range relatively focused. Rather than trying to offer every battery available in the market, we prefer to work with products we believe provide the quality, functionality and manufacturer support appropriate for a long-term investment in a customer’s home.
Importantly, there isn’t one battery that is automatically best for every property. The right choice depends on the home, the existing solar system and what the customer actually wants to achieve.
Tesla Powerwall 3
Tesla is probably the best-known home battery brand in Australia.
Powerwall 3 combines a 13.5 kWh usable battery with an integrated solar inverter and sophisticated energy management through the Tesla app. Tesla currently supports multiple Powerwall 3 units and additional expansion units can be added to increase storage capacity.
Where Tesla stands out
An excellent user experience
The Tesla app is one of Powerwall’s biggest strengths. Customers can easily see where their electricity is coming from, where it is going, how much solar they’re producing and how much battery energy remains.
Tesla also provides automatic energy management, monitoring and over-the-air software updates.
Strong backup capability
Powerwall 3 is particularly attractive to customers who place significant value on backup power. Its Australian specification provides substantial output capability and strong motor-start capacity, which can be useful where larger household loads need to operate during an outage.
Simple capacity expansion
A Powerwall 3 starts with 13.5 kWh usable capacity. Expansion units can then increase the overall storage capacity depending on the system configuration.
Things to consider
The 13.5 kWh increments mean Tesla doesn’t provide the same fine-grained capacity choices as some modular battery systems.
For example, if our assessment suggests a household needs around 20 kWh, another battery platform may allow us to get closer to that requirement without jumping directly from 13.5 kWh to 27 kWh.
Powerwall 3 is also fundamentally a single-phase product in its Australian specification, so the electrical configuration of a three-phase property needs to be assessed carefully rather than simply assuming Powerwall is automatically the right solution.
Tesla may suit you if:
- you highly value a polished and easy-to-use app;
- backup power is important;
- you like the simplicity of an integrated system;
- 13.5 kWh capacity increments suit your energy requirements; or
- you already have Tesla energy products and want to remain within that ecosystem.
Sigenergy SigenStor
Sigenergy has become a major player in residential energy storage because of the flexibility of its SigenStor platform. Rather than thinking of it simply as a battery, it is better described as an integrated home energy system.
The SigenStor platform can combine the solar inverter, battery, energy management system and optional EV charging functionality within one ecosystem.
Where Sigenergy stands out
Very flexible battery sizing
This is one of Sigenergy’s strongest advantages. The system uses modular battery packs and supports multiple modules within the same system. Current Australian product information includes battery modules in different capacities, allowing us to configure storage considerably more precisely than systems based around one fixed battery size.
That can be very useful. Rather than deciding between, for example, roughly 13 kWh and roughly 27 kWh, we may be able to build a system much closer to what the household actually requires.
Single-phase and three-phase options
Sigenergy provides both single-phase and three-phase energy controllers across a broad range of power levels.
For homes with larger three-phase electrical requirements, this flexibility can make it particularly attractive.
Highly integrated technology
SigenStor integrates energy storage, solar management and sophisticated software within the same ecosystem.
It also has an optional DC EV charging module, giving homeowners considering future electrification another interesting pathway.
Easy future expansion
Its modular architecture means capacity can be increased if the household’s requirements grow.
That can be attractive for customers expecting future additions such as an EV, heat-pump hot water or increased electrical consumption.
Things to consider
Sigenergy is a newer name than manufacturers such as Fronius and Sungrow, so some customers naturally place greater value on the longer operating histories of those companies.
Its sophistication can also mean there are more design choices to make.
That isn’t necessarily a disadvantage – but it makes correct system design particularly important.
Sigenergy may suit you if:
- you want very flexible battery sizing;
- you have a three-phase home;
- you expect your energy requirements to grow;
- you’re interested in a highly integrated home energy ecosystem;
- EV integration is important; or
- you want significant flexibility over how the system is configured.
Fronius Reserva
Fronius has been a major name in the Australian solar industry for many years, particularly through its inverter range.
The Fronius Reserva extends that ecosystem into battery storage. Reserva is a high-voltage lithium iron phosphate battery designed to integrate directly with compatible Fronius hybrid inverters. Current Reserva systems offer a range of modular capacities, with parallel battery configurations also supported.
Where Fronius stands out
Excellent integration with Fronius solar systems
This is perhaps the clearest reason to choose Reserva.
For a customer installing a new Fronius hybrid solar system – or where an appropriate Fronius GEN24 inverter already exists – Reserva creates a very cohesive ecosystem.
Solar, battery and other compatible Fronius devices can be managed through Fronius Solar.web.
DC-coupled architecture
Reserva is DC coupled with compatible Fronius hybrid inverters.
That allows solar energy to move directly into the battery without first being converted into AC and then back into DC for storage, helping create an efficient integrated solar-and-storage system.
Strong manufacturer ecosystem
Fronius is unusual in the solar industry because its reputation has been built over decades around power electronics and solar inverters rather than entering the market purely as a battery manufacturer.
For some customers, that history and established service infrastructure carry considerable weight.
Useful modular sizing
Reserva offers modular capacity options and larger configurations can be created using parallel systems where appropriate.
Things to consider
Reserva makes the most sense when considered as part of the broader Fronius ecosystem.
If a property already has another manufacturer’s inverter, or the customer’s requirements point toward a completely different architecture, another battery may be more appropriate.
That is why we generally wouldn’t recommend choosing Reserva simply because the battery itself looks attractive.
The solar and battery system should be considered together.
Fronius may suit you if:
- you value the Fronius brand and ecosystem;
- you are installing a compatible Fronius hybrid inverter;
- you already have an appropriate Fronius system;
- you want an integrated DC-coupled solution; or
- long-term manufacturer pedigree is particularly important to you.
Sungrow
Sungrow is another manufacturer with a long history in solar inverters and energy storage.
Its current Australian residential offering includes modular high-voltage LFP batteries paired with Sungrow hybrid inverters.
The SBH range, for example, uses modular battery units and can create a wide range of storage capacities, with larger parallel configurations also possible.
Where Sungrow stands out
Flexible capacity
The modular architecture makes it relatively easy to configure systems around different household requirements.
That means 15 kWh, 20 kWh, 25 kWh, 30 kWh and larger configurations can all be practical options depending on the system.
Single-phase and three-phase solutions
Sungrow offers residential hybrid inverter solutions for both single-phase and three-phase properties.
That gives us considerable flexibility when designing systems for different Australian homes.
A well-established solar ecosystem
Like Fronius, Sungrow has a substantial background in solar inverter technology.
Its batteries, hybrid inverters and iSolarCloud monitoring platform form a complete energy ecosystem.
Strong capability without unnecessary complexity
For many homeowners, Sungrow occupies an attractive middle ground.
It provides modular capacity, strong battery power capability, backup functionality and a mature solar platform without necessarily requiring every advanced feature available in some other systems.
Things to consider
Customers who place the highest value on app design may prefer the experience offered by Tesla or Sigenergy.
And as with Fronius, Sungrow batteries are best assessed as part of a complete Sungrow hybrid system rather than viewing the battery in isolation.
Sungrow may suit you if:
- you want flexible battery sizing;
- you have a single-phase or three-phase property;
- you want a mature solar and battery ecosystem;
- you value strong technical capability and scalability; or
- you already have compatible Sungrow equipment.
So which battery is best?
There isn’t one answer. If we had to simplify the four systems:
Tesla
Excellent user experience, strong backup capability and a very polished integrated home battery solution.
Sigenergy
Exceptional flexibility and scalability, with sophisticated energy management and strong single- and three-phase options.
Fronius
A particularly compelling option for customers wanting a premium Fronius solar-and-battery ecosystem with strong manufacturer pedigree.
Sungrow
A flexible and mature solar-and-storage platform offering strong performance, modular sizing and broad residential applications.
But that still doesn’t mean you should choose a battery based on this list alone.
The right battery depends on:
- your electricity consumption;
- when you consume electricity;
- your solar generation;
- your existing inverter;
- single-phase versus three-phase supply;
- your backup requirements;
- future EV or electrification plans;
- available installation space;
- your electricity tariff; and
- how much battery capacity you actually need.
